PERNEM: Ugvem residents on Wednesday claimed the heavy rains have exposed the company’s gross “mismanagement and negligence” with regards to the Mopa airport work as mud along with rubbles that got washed away destroyed their fields in the low-lying areas.

The locals of Ugvem claimed that the heavy rains have revealed the negligence of the company as mud and rubble used for the levelling work got washed off the plateau and damaged their fields. However, they apprehend that if the problem is not resolved soon this mud and rubbles will land in the residential areas.

Deputy sarpanch of Ugvem-Tamboxe-Mopa Subodh Mahale said, “This is total negligence on part of company. Heavy rains washed away the mud and rubble from the plateau and later destroyed the fields. We request the MLA to personally visit the spot and check the ground reality. We also urge Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to intervene”.

“This is the reason for which we had raised objections. We were not opposing the project but its ill-effects. It appears that the company wants the villagers to vacate houses,” Mahale alleged.

This is the second time in quick succession as during Cyclone Tauktae also mud and rubble had destroyed their fields, plantation and water sources in five villages.

A delegation of local farmers and sarpanchas from Uguem, Casarvarnem, Tulaskarwadi, Warkhand and Chandel had submitted a memorandum to Pernem Deputy Collector Ravishekhar Nipanikar demanding action within eight days.
