PANJIM: Normal life was affected in Goa as the southwest monsoon picked up steam as heavy to very heavy rains lashed the State, reporting over four inches of rains in last 24-hours.  IMD Goa in-charge Rahul said that for the next three days, rainfall exceeding 12 cms per day, is likely to be witnessed along with wind speed of around 40-50kmph.

He said that with increased rainfall activity to continue, the areas vulnerable for landslide and flooding may be kept under monitoring and necessary precautions may be taken. “Citizens are also advised to take all precautions and stay indoors,” he added.

Many low-lying areas were inundated and the vehicular traffic was slowed because of water-logging and the ongoing construction works of major roads worsened the situation.

With heavy rains to continue over Goa till June 18, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa Observatory has requested citizens to remain indoors and has urged State administration to monitor the vulnerable areas.

After June 15, that recorded 4.75 inches of rains- highest in a day of the seasons so far, on Wednesday, June 16, a total of 4.09 inches of rains were witnessed.

Since June 1 till date, the State has recorded 21 inches (533.9mm) of rain as against the normal average of 15.72 inches (399 mm).

Rahul said that the off shore trough at mean sea level from south Maharashtra coast to north Kerala coast and a trough running from East Central Arabian Sea to south Konkan at 5.8 km above mean sea level, will continue to enhance rainfall activity over the coast.

“Though the low pressure area over east Uttar Pradesh has become less marked today, the pressure gradient across the west coast remains high and active monsoon conditions persist,” he explained. In last 24-hours, Mapusa reported the maximum of 5.98 inches of rainfall, followed by Quepem that recorded 5.54 inches of rains.
