MARGAO: Continuous and heavy rains lashing in the State have resulted in the leachate from the garbage dump yard at Sonsoddo flowing down into the drains which have added more problems in the locality.
On the other side, there are no preventive measures from the concerned authorities to avoid the flowing of leachate, which may lead to health hazards.
In the last two days, it has been noticed that leachate from Sonsoddo dump yard flowing freely into the drains, leading towards paddy fields and nearby locality. The flow of leachate is polluting the groundwater.
Councillor Camilo Barretto said that the flow of leachate from the Sonsoddo dump yard will certainly pollute the paddy fields in the nearby locality.
“We have noticed this for last two days, however, this is not new as every year this leachate pollutes the fields and wells. I have more concern about the paddy fields which are cultivated by the people belonging to Scheduled Tribes community,” he stated.
He said that the concerned authority should have covered the dump completely and precautions should have been taken to prevent the flow of the leachate into drains.
“This flow of leachate has already polluted several wells of nearby localities. We can also witness the black leachate flowing through the nullahs in Borda, which ends up meeting the River Sal," he stated.
Camilo urged the concerned authorities and Margao Municipality to work out some measures in order to stop the flowing of leachate into the drains. He said that he will raise this issue in the next council meeting.
On the other side, the citizens complained that the leachate smell is unbearable and have urged the concerned authorities to act fast before it can lead to major health hazards in the locality.
