Feast of St Sebastian celebrated at Chinchinim
The Feast of St.Sebastian was celebrated with great pomp and gaiety at the St.Sebestian chapel at Chinchinim recently. His grace Anthony Alwyn Baretto the Bishop of Sindhudurg who was the main celebrant, exhorted the faithful to remain faithful to Jesus Christ under all circumstances. Bishop Alwyn urged the faithful to follow the example of St.Sebastian who remained committed to Christ despite severe persecution and had to sacrifice his life for the cause of his faith.
Catholics under no circumstances should waver in their faith he added. The life of St Sebastian is an apt example for us to strengthen our commitment to Christ, and renew and follow our baptismal vows.
Rev. Fr.Armando the vicar of Chinchinim and Fr.Roncy Braganza were the co celebrants at the feast mass.
The village of Chinchinim suffered the worst smallpox epidemic at the beginning of the twentieth century. The chapel dedicated to St.Sebestian was built in 1910 to ward off the epidemic, and after the installation of the statue of St.Sebastian at the chapel the epidemic miraculously disappeared. This year being the centenary year of the chapel, The Bishop of Sindhudurg was specially invited to celebrate feast mass. Pic: saint.jpg in common
