MAPUSA: Goals from Romeo Fernandes and Anslem Futardo earned Dempo Sports Club Juniors a 2-0 victory over Calangute Association in GFA’s Taca Goa U-20 League at Poriat ground, Tuesday. Dempo led 1-0 at the break.
In the first half, Calangute’s Joaquim Pacheco saw his penalty saved by the Dempo goalkeeper, while at the other end Romeo converted his penalty to give Dempo the lead just before the break.
style="text-align:justify;tab-stops:5.25in">Dempo created many chances from the wings and could have scored a few more, but they did not have a lethal striker to tuck the opportunities away. Striker Myron Fernandes and midfielder Aniston Fernandes had left for Denmark on Sunday for their three month training programme.
In the 20th minute Dempo’s Vincy Fernandes fouled Calangute’s Babu Pednekar in the penalty area. The referee had to check with his assistant that the foul was committed inside the box before awarding the penalty. Joaquim struck the penalty well, but the Dempo custodian guessed the right way to deny him.
Five minutes later, Dempo’s Seriton Fernandes broke into the box and shot but his effort cannoned back of the post.
Just before the break, Dempo’s Vincy lifted the ball on the left side and Calangute’s Babu deliberately handled the ball, giving Dempo a penalty. Romeo Fernandes stepped and blasted the ball into the corner to give Dempo the lead.
Changing over, Calangute’s Canute D’Souza’s shot from the edge of the box was palmed away for a corner by the Dempo goalkeeper.
Dempo’s Seriton had a shot charged down by the Calangute defense and Brian Mascarenhas shot just wide with the rebound.
Shortly, Jovito Fernandes drove in a low cross, but Romeo could not direct his attempt on target.
Mandarro Dessai was introduced half way through the second session and started to cause his opponents a few problems on the wing. He managed to set up Albino Pereira, but his attempt went wide.
With fifteen minutes left to play Joaquim swung in a hopeful free-kick for Calangute, but the Dempo custodian punched it away to safety.
In the injury time Mandarro Dessai crossed from the right side and Anslem Futardo ran in to slice the ball into the back of the net to make sure of the three points for Dempo.
Jeevan Singh and Babu Pednekar were booked for Calangute while, Jesmon Carvalho was the only Dempo player booked.
At Cansaulim ground, Jesus Cadoza struck a solitary goal in the eight minute to give Santa Cruz club of Cavelossim a 1-0 win over Curtorim Gymkhana.
