Today, July 25, 2024, marks an important milestone in the annals of Nazareth Home, Pernem, at the completion of 50 years of its establishment. In 1974, the then Superior General, Sr Elizabeth D’Souza, of the Congregation of Handmaids of Christ, initiated the missionary zeal to work in Pernem village, embodying the vision of their Founder Msgr Herculano Gonsalves, to reach out to the poor and the needy, particularly the empowerment of children and women.

The three mission-minded Sisters, late Sr Alacoque Rodrigues, Sr Marietta Fernandes and Sr Jane Lobo, stepped into the village of Pernem and made a significant impact to those less educated and poor people. Caritas Goa, under the direction of Fr Cirilo Pascoal Pereira, in those days, played a significant role in extending full support in the affectivity and sustenance of the mission. The then Parish Priest of St Joseph Church in Pernem, Fr Custodio Chagas e Silva too stretched all possible support to get this branch called ‘Nazareth Home’, established in Pernem. Late Rajendra Deshprabhu was kind and benevolent with his generosity to initially shelter the Sisters and give them space to conduct the Centre till the House of our own was built in 1987. Even though a non-Catholic, he understood the significance of Christian service to Humanity.

Under the leadership of Sr Alacoque, the Sisters focused on creating a platform for women to gain financial independence, basically through Needle Work Centre. They often walked long distances to reach faraway needy families, bringing them comfort and consolation. They provided medical aid and practical assistance to improve the living conditions of the underprivileged ones.

Through their involvement in parish activities, like teaching catechism, sacristy work, counselling, family visits, etc, they brought new vigour and enthusiasm to the church. Sr Alacoque initiated Pre-Primary School, right from the beginning, forming the tiny tots with love and dedication. Hundreds of past students testify that the education imparted to them in their initial stage serves as foundation for their integral formation.

The establishment of numerous Needle Work sub-centres like Torxem, Dargalle. Sucor-waddo, Neibag, etc., during those early years was a direct response to the growing number of needlework students. These sub-centres not only focused on needlework training but also offered a variety of short-term courses. Women benefitted from courses in candle making, flower arrangements, cooking, letter writing, etc.

In response to the skills they acquired through the various courses, many women equipped themselves with practical abilities that translated into income-generating opportunities. Many have successfully financed their families and have consequently gained a sense of empowerment and self-worth.

The commendable work initiated way back in 1974 by the Sisters of Handmaids of Christ through Nazareth Home, Pernem, continues to this day, serving as a testament to their unwavering commitment and the enduring impact of their mission. Over the years, the institution has faced its share of challenges and obstacles, but through it all, the guiding hand of God has remained steadfast. Despite the ups and downs, the Sisters have persevered, drawing strength from their faith that God’s grace and blessings will never fail. This unwavering trust has been rewarded, as the institution has emerged stronger and more resilient in this golden year.

Being at the helm of 50 years journey of blessings and graces of Nazareth Home, Pernem, Sr Adeline expresses her deep joy and a sense of satisfaction along with the two Sisters, Sr Carmen Vaz and Sr Nazarine Fernandes. With the blessing of their holy Founder Msgr Herculano Gonsalves, and supported by the Congregation, they work in unison to bring out the best in those whom they love and serve. The Congregation of Handmaids of Christ, Goa is deeply grateful to all those who support them in this mission. There is an insightful desire to expand and enhance their outreach activities ensuring that their presence becomes more relevant and effective to meet the evolving needs of those whom they are called to proclaim the Good News.
