A positive start no doubt for Portugal

Portugal commenced its campaign for the Euro 24 with a win in its first match against Czech Republic. Ajit John speaks to Goans about their experience and whether the quality of play displayed by the Portugal team makes them favourites for the tournament
A positive start no doubt for Portugal

It was a decent performance. They dominated the majority of the match, however, lacked the cutting edge and it almost cost them in the end. They need to ensure they take their chances because they definitely won't get this lucky. I'm sure as they get into the tournament they will only improve. There is no doubt that on paper they're one of the most star studded squads, however, it all depends on how they can work as a team.

Roberto Martinez must be given credit for those last minute crucial substitutions which pulled it for Portugal. But overall, I feel Portugal fared poorly in the first 60 minutes and the score line rather should have been much different. Also praises to the Czechia team who played with a solid defensive mind.

Cedric Lobo, Margao

I think Portugal played really well. He kept piling up the pressure, but just lacked the end product. Cristiano’s performance was a big positive for the team. They were a bit shaky defensively. Credit to the Czech Republic player because whenever they hit on the counter attack, he looked very likely to score. Three points will prove big in this group stage. I hope Portugal go on to win the next two games as well.

The game was top notch but when it comes to Portugal's performance against Czechia, they showed real potential and skill. Their victory was impressive and definitely puts them in a strong position. However, being favourites is not just about one game, they need to maintain their performance and consistency to solidify that status Portugal still has to prove themselves consistently to establish themselves as the top contenders It's all about sustained excellence in the upcoming matches to truly cement their position as favourites.

Three points in the bag and off to a great start. Not the type of performance we would like to see from a star studded team like Portugal but yes, considering the first match, quite a decent performance. After going a goal down, the team fought really well and showed great character. Need to put in more crosses from the flanks for Ronaldo. Its early days to predict the champions, but a lot to improve on and definitely they will come all guns blazing. Proud of the boys.

Onwards and upwards from here on.

Viva Portugal.

Portugal began their Euro 2024 campaign with a narrow win, showcasing both strengths and areas needing improvement. Despite the victory, there is a noticeable lack of finishing and a scarcity of goal-scoring opportunities, with the lone exception of Bruno Fernandes, who stands out as the primary creator, but the team's tactics and ball distribution require a lot of refinement. As the tournament progresses, expecting favourable results while maintaining their current form could pose challenges for Portugal. However, there is sufficient time to address these weaknesses and enhance their performance. I for one would like to remain hopeful for the best possible outcome.

Liam Vás, Margao

Portugal played poorly but good thing they survived. Bruno is one of the best playmakers, if he's not the best, playing him in a position where he can't do his best and create clear chances is just criminal. Martinez hasn’t utilised him well. Portugal played better in the second half but the team tempo in the build-up was slow, and enthusiasm was missing in the deep front. Czech Republic almost snatched the win with their well-organized defence and transitions.

Conrad Barretto, Margao

Portugal played with fire. Dominated the game and created few chances, but with the quality of that squad, they shouldn't have suffered that much. Too many players pass the ball safe and backwards. Cancelo, Bruno, Bernardo and Vitinha, all could’ve hit the ball into Ronaldo much earlier and they refused all night, a couple of crosses to Ronaldo and they scored once but offside and he missed another one. Hope they tweak things tactically in the next game.

Daniel Fernandes, Orlim

It was an amazing game to watch, especially the latter part of the second half. Cristiano Ronaldo, although not on the score sheet, was influential throughout the game. Portugal’s defence and midfield also contributed significantly to maintaining control and creating opportunities. Czechia fought well defensively but had very few chances in front of the Portuguese goal. The highlight of the match was Francisco Conceicao scoring the winner, who is just about half the age of CR7. It’s crazy to think that Ronaldo has been playing at this highest level for 20 years, and still being the most influential player on the pitch. Viva Portugal!

As much as people will be talking about this being an unconvincing performance, disappointing performance from this star studded Portugal team, I’m not too disappointed with the result as it’s just the first match and yes in the group stages, 3 points is a must. Lots to work on to be favourites though.

 Kayne Rebelo, Socorro

Some will call it a lucky win for Portugal, but there was never a doubt that they were the stronger side in the tie. The Czech Republic fought very well, but all their fight was in the defence and not on the attacking front, they had only one shot on goal, which was the goal. But then Portugal need to play much better to be considered as one of the favourites when going into the next round, because some other sides like Spain and Germany are playing way above their level. But I would still rate Portugal to make it to the semi-finals at least. Siuuuu..!
