The spirit of change, and a revolutionary one at that, is in the air now for quite some time. Every sphere, be it education, business, media, music and entertainment, community service, health and nutrition awareness is witnessing revolutionary changes. Budding organizations across the country are striving to provide quality education to children across socio-cultural and geographical boundaries and the results of their efforts are just taking shape on the horizon. Educators across the world are realising the need to focus on children’s education and literature. A great deal of attention is given to generating literature and bringing together teachers and parents to create a productive environment for children to learn and explore ideas. In Goa, Kokani Bhasha Mandal has taken an initiative to create awareness about children’s literature, promote children’s literature and education and give the budding young minds of the state an opportunity to explore the unlimited spectrum of creativity that lies before them. In retrospect, one must have observed this gradual creation of a cannon of “children’s literature”. Children’s literature has existed since time immemorial. Right from the grandmothers stories to our mothers good-night lullabies, from the oral renditions of Ramayana and Mahabharata to the audio visual brilliance of Chota Bhim and the likes, from Aesop fables and Panchatantra to hundreds of exciting new books that are made available in print and digitally every day!. The generation of such content and continued discourse on its impact on the psychological and cognitive development of a child is being realized and not just brushed off as irrelevant and a hindrance in the process of growth like it was a few years ago. Over the last few years, Konkani Bhasha Mandal has organised various workshops for teachers and events that bring together parents and teachers to work as a team in the process of benefiting a child. The Bal Sahitya Parishad plays a pivotal role in this process. This step that Konkani Bhasha Mandal has taken towards connecting children with this plethora of literary content and producing more such productive content is the need of the hour and it cannot be stressed on enough. KBM has been organising this Parishad for the last three years, and this year, the fourth Bal Sahitya Parishad transpired on the digital platform. The organising team led by newly appointed President of the Mandal, Anwesha Singbal didn’t allow the pandemic to cause a hindrance in their efforts to bring together a group of people that are striving to shape the future generations. This Parishad is a platform for the educators and parents of Goa to connect with some of the brightest and most experienced minds across the country that have dedicated their lives for the purpose of children’s literature and education. The parishad hosts panel discussions, talks, and interactive sessions with these individuals to delve with issues such as the kind of content that needs to be generated in children’s books, benefits of multilingualism, promoting a reading culture among children as well as parents, importance of a holistic education practice, allowing the child to indulge in creative expression and the benefits of such agency and several such issues that delve in depth with the development of a child and the balance that we, as adults can provide. This year, in the first week of November, the Bal Sahitya Parishad team successfully organized six sessions with several distinguished educators and writers as well as illustrators across the country. The pandemic, which caused an initial barrier in the process of organising the Parishad this year at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao like it is every year, provided an opportunity to the organising team to go digital and expand and reach out to people across the country and not just the people of the state. The lively discussions are available for viewing on the YouTube page of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Goa. This Bal Sahitya Parishad and other such efforts that Konkani Bhasha Mandal takes, along with institutions across the country that work with the aim of providing quality education to children and giving them the opportunity to explore their creative genius cannot work in isolation. It needs the support, critique, and efforts of the society at large to bring to fruition, the efforts that these few individuals are taking. Let this Annual Bal Sahitya Parishad be the first of many such endeavours towards bringing forth a remarkable change in the field of children’s education in the state, the country and the world.
