10 fishermen rescued after canoe capsizes off Canacona coast

PANJIM: Ten fishermen were rescued after their fishing boat sank in Canacona area on Sunday.

Goa Police, Fire & Emergency Services, Life Guards and local populace braved the waters, strong winds and joined in the rescue mission and brought all the drowning victims safely back ashore.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Goa Police said, "In a swift and coordinated effort, Goa Police, Fire & Emergency Services, Life Guards and local populace successfully rescued 10 fishermen s after their fishing boat sank this morning in Canacona area."

Speaking to O Heraldo, Dhiraj Dessai, Station Fire Officer, Fire Station Canacona said, “We received a call stating that a canoe has capsized near Rajbag beach at around 11.20 am. Immediately a team of five fire personnel led by Sub Officer Ulhas Gaonkar rushed to the spot and began rescue operation which last for around two hours. All the crew were rescued safely.”

This is the third incident of a canoe capsizing in the sea within a period of 30 days.

Earlier on August 6, a canoe with its owner and 11 crew on board had overturned off Benaulim. However, all managed to swim to safety.

As many as 13 fishermen, including helpers, were rescued from the choppy waters after their canoe capsized in the sea on July 28.
