PANJIM: The annual 61-day fishing ban will be implemented in Goa from June 1 to July 31.

During this period mechanised fishing will be prohibited along the sea coast and territorial waters of Goa.

Speaking to reporters, Fisheries Director, Shamila Monteiro said, “The ban will be in force from June 1 to July 31. We have issued notification in this regard. We have also circulated letters to all the Mamletdars, Collectors, Coast Guard and coastal marine police so that the ban is in force in toto.”

“Officers are there right from Pernem to Canacona to see that the ban is in force. Action will be taken if any illegal fishing activity is noticed,” she said.

The ban is imposed every year to allow fish to breed and repopulate the waters. There are around 1500 fishing trawlers in Goa.

Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar also has warned of strict action if anyone is found fishing during the ban period.
