MARGAO: Within a span of 48 hours, the State witnessed a tragic string of fatalities as seven deaths including six were reported across the Salcete taluka. Also three persons were injured.

Of the total seven deaths, six died in accidents, while one was crushed to death by a speeding train.

Two fatal accidents occurred in Cuncolim, three within the jurisdiction of the Maina-Curtorim Police and one in Dhargalim in Pernem taluka. The train mishap was reported at Majorda. 

In the first incident reported on Sunday, a collision between a scooter and a tempo near Sucaldem in Cuncolim resulted in the death of the tempo driver, Bipin Oram, 26. The tempo, heading towards Velim, collided with a scooter travelling from Velim to Chinchinim. The impact caused the tempo to also hit an electric pole, leading to serious injuries for Bipin Oram, who was later declared dead at the South Goa District Hospital, said Cuncolim PI Diogo Gracias. The tempo cleaner, Bipin Nair, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the hospital, while the scooter rider escaped with minor injuries. Both vehicles were removed from the accident site, and a case under relevant sections has been registered.

In the second accident, car driver Casley Senoy Rebello, 21, a resident of Benaulim, collided with the scooter of Joao Baptista Antonio Coutinho, 68, causing severe injuries that resulted in Coutinho’s death. The incident occurred at the new bypass road, Dongrim Junction, Nuvem. Based on the complaint lodged by head constable Prasanna Prabhugaonkar, a case has been registered against the car driver under Sections 279, 338, and 304-A of IPC.

The third accident involved Nagraj Waddii, aged 45, riding a motorcycle with a pillion rider, Sadiq Mohammad Ahim, aged 22. While travelling from Margao to Ponda, near Angel Primary School, Loutolim, Waddii lost control, leading to a self-accident, said PSI Prashant Bhagat. Waddii succumbed to his injuries at the South Goa District Hospital.

In another accident, Krishanath Babapso, aged 72, sustained injuries near Borim Bridge, Loutolim, in a collision involving a car driven by Pravin Naik. Krishanath was shifted to the District Hospital Margao but later died at Goa Medical College, (GMC) Bambolim. PSI Praful Giri of the Maina-Curtorim police station said a case has been registered against the car driver for rash and negligent driving.

In yet another accident, Sunny Shirodkar, a resident of Maddicatta, Cuncolim, suffered fatal injuries in a hit-and-run near the Cuncolim IDC at around 11 pm. The driver of the unknown vehicle fled the scene, without even calling an ambulance or offering medical aid to the victim, who later died at the South Goa Medical Hospital. PSI Kavita Raut has registered a case against the unidentified driver for rash and negligent driving causing death.

At Dhargalim, a pedestrian Chandrakant Kambli (55) was killed after he was knocked down by a speeding car on Sunday. The accident occurred when Kambli was crossing the road.

In a tragic incident, the Konkan Railway Police recovered the body of an unidentified woman beside the railway track near Majorda Church. The accident came to light at around 6.50 am on Sunday, when the Station Master of Majorda Railway Station alerted the police that a woman had been run over by a train.

Upon reaching the scene, PSI Pritesh Govekar and the police staff identified the deceased as Rosa Fernandes, a 77-year-old resident of Gomes Waddo, Majorda. Her identity was confirmed by her daughter, Vincentina Fernandes.

The police registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC for unnatural death.
