PORIEM: Rising water levels at the Anjunem Dam have prompted officials from the Water Resources Department (WRD) to alert locals of Sattarai, Sankhali, and Bicholim to stay away from riverbanks, streams, and waterfalls, and to exercise caution.
In their notice, WRD stated that the gates of the Anjunem reservoir in Sattari will soon be opened to release excess water, as the dam is nearing 100% full capacity and will soon begin to overflow.
It has been reported that the impounding of water in the Anjunem Dam commenced on June 20. As of July 11, the water level in the dam is at 86.95 metres, and it is anticipated that the dam will be filled up to R.L 90.00 metres (3.20 metres below full reservoir level) within a few days, necessitating the release of excess water.
The excess water in the dam will be routed through Costi Nadi and Valvanti River, normally during low tide. There is a possibility of an increase in the water levels in the two rivers. Villagers have been instructed to be cautious while washing clothes, taking bath, and taking their cattle to the riverside, and they have been advised to avoid crossing the rivers.
