Calangute: Looks like the Baga road at Calangute is going the Smart City way with another crater surfacing on the busy road after a night soil tanker sank into the road at Sauntavaddo on Sunday.

A huge crater was spotted near the Piety chapel at Khobravaddo, on Monday, with villagers pointing fingers on the sewerage pipeline network. Locals from the area have now put palm fronds around the gaping hole as a precautionary measure. “A lot of tourists ride bikes on this road and at night someone might fall in and get injured,” locals said.

According to locals, the Baga road has been sinking repeatedly because of shoddy work on the sewerage pipeline network.

“This is usual monsoon story of Calangute-Baga road after the JICA sewerage pipeline project,” local NGO Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) president Premanand Divkar said, pointing out that sinking of the busy Baga road has become a regular feature ever since it was dug up to lay the sewerage pipeline network some years ago.

Locals said the road has also started sinking at some more spots following the incessant rain.
