PANJIM: The State government has nominated Chief Minister Pramod Sawant who is also the Finance Minister, as permanent member of the GST Council, replacing Minister Mauvin Godinho, who had been representing the State as its member on GST Council for last six years since the tenure of then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

These appointments are made based on the nomination of  Chief Minister headed government

Last year, Godinho was appointed as member of Group of Ministers (GoM) of the GST Council that was tasked with rationalising GST rates to simplify the tax structure. He will lose that position too.

Sawant, will attend all forthcoming GST Council meetings.

In other States, the Finance Minister is the State’s representative in the GST Council.

Meanwhile, the first meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council after the Narendra Modi-led government 3.0 took charge at the Centre last week, will be held on June 22 in New Delhi, and is likely to discuss rationalisation of indirect tax structure.

The GST Council is an apex member committee constituted to modify, reconcile or to procure any law or regulation based on the context of Goods and Services Tax in India.

The GST Council, consisting of the Union Finance Minister and representatives from all States and Union Territories, was established to make decisions on various aspects of GST, including tax rates, exemptions, and administrative procedures.

Earlier in 2021, Godinho was also appointed in two Group of Ministers (GoM) GST committees namely Analysis of Revenue and Boosting Real Estate.
