Carmona P’yat inspects riverside property, GCZMA plays truant

Team Herald

MARGAO: An inspection of a riverside property in Carmona was conducted on Tuesday by the Carmona village panchayat.

A few locals, the Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) members as well as the local MLA, were present, along with two resource persons. A family member of the property owner was also present.

It may be recalled that the Carmona village gram sabha had resolved to carry out this inspection, and Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas had also written to the panchayat asking for the same.

However, the locals were unhappy that the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) was not present for the inspection, even though the panchayat had issued a notice to the Authority, asking them to attend the inspection.

During the inspection, the proprietor, who had earlier replied to the show cause notice that was issued by the panchayat, gave detailed clarifications on various issues raised, denying the allegations made.  It was also pointed out that a wall had been built by the Water Resources Department (WRD) to prevent the ingress of saline water.

The resource persons, representing the MLA, will submit their findings to the MLA and panchayat, who will take a decision after studying the same.
