Centre will decide Mopa link road toll issue: Minister

PANJIM: Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Thursday said that the Mopa link road toll issue will be decided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH).

Speaking to mediapersons at Porvorim, Godinho said that the toll was imposed as per the instructions of the MoRTH and that a representation had already been submitted to the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways in this regard. It’s a Central law and had to be adopted uniformly, he said, when asked about the threat by taxi operators to drop the passengers at the link road rather than pay toll.

He said, “My stand is very clear for Goa and Goans that we need app-based taxi service and we need to adopt technology for the future. That’s why we are going digital and we cannot remain behind or go to primitive era. Why can’t taxi operators have their own app?”

He added that the government is ready to finance them.

Taxi operators and Mopa locals have been protesting against the imposition of toll on the newly inaugurated link road to the Mopa international airport.

The seven-km Mopa link project, costing Rs 1,183 crore was dedicated to the nation by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari on July 11.
