MARGAO: Concerned citizens are raising alarm over the deteriorating condition of footpaths in Margao, emphasising the heightened risk faced by pedestrians during the ongoing monsoon season. The primary issue stems from broken tiles and uneven surfaces, which become increasingly hazardous when wet, potentially causing slips and falls.

Residents recall previous assurances from Margao Municipal Council (MMC) officials, who had promised to identify and rectify these issues. However, pedestrians express disappointment as the situation remains largely unchanged, leaving them vulnerable to accidents.

Lorna Fernandes, a representative of the Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN), highlighted a particularly dangerous section of pavement. "There's a significant depression in the pavement at the junction opposite Kamat Hotel and the Municipal Garden in Margao," she explained, pointing to a caved-in portion that severely impedes pedestrian movement.

Fernandes stressed the urgency of the situation, questioning, "Will the MMC act before it results in a fatal injury to a pedestrian?" Her concern echoes the sentiments of many Margao residents who fear for their safety while navigating the town's pavements.

The problem is not isolated to this single location. Similar hazardous conditions plague footpaths across Margao.
