CALANGUTE: A couple from Matunga, Mumbai, drowned off the Sinquerim beach in Candolim early on Friday morning while another woman who was with them was rescued and has been admitted in the GMC Bambolim.
“Unaware that there was a red alert in Goa, and the sea conditions were dangerous, the deceased, Prakash K Doshi, 73, his wife, Harshita P Doshi, 69, and another couple had gone for an early morning walk on the beach,” Calangute police said.
While taking a walk, three of them were swept away by the rough waves and started drowning. Locals in the area immediately rushed to their aid and managed to rescue one woman from the water. She was identified as Kalpana Satish Parekh, 68, and has been admitted to the GMC and is undergoing treatment.
After locals witnessed the couple drowning, they raised an alarm with the tourist police unit and lifeguard crew responding immediately.
The duo were retrieved from the water but all attempts to revive them proved futile. The victims were later shifted to the Candolim Primary Health Centre (PHC) where they were declared dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.
They were part of a group of tourists from Mumbai who had come to Goa for a holiday.
The deceased couple were residents of Matunga, Mumbai. Calangute police have registered a case of unnatural death. Further inquiry is in progress.
