PANJIM: Last week Goans learnt that they will have to pay more for power. Now they  know they have to pay more for petrol from June 22

The State government on Friday announced increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) on diesel and petrol.

Now with this, petrol prices have gone up by Re 1 while diesel prices are up by 36 paise in the State.

As a result of this, the common man  will pay more for eating out, buy vegetables, fruit and fish. This is because a rise in petrol and power has a ripple effect on businesses and prices.

A notification issued by Finance Department said, "Motor spirit, which is commonly known as petrol, including ethanol blended petrol sold by public sector as well as private sector oil marketing companies to their authorised retail outlets within the state, has been hiked to 21.5 per cent and for High Speed Diesel Oil (HSD) it has been hiked to 17.5 per cent." the notification said.

Reacting to the hike, Opposition parties demanded immediate roll back of the hike in the prices.

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao said, "Government wants to break the backbone of the common people. Recently they hiked the power tariff; today there is a hike in fuel prices. The reaction of the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant that there will be no impact on the people due to power tariff hike exposes the anti-poor agenda of the BJP Government."

He then went on to add, "This hike is to collect funds and spend on organizing more events as the State Treasury is gone empty. BJP Government is not bothered about the hardships of the common people.

He said the Congress party will protest if the Government does not roll back the hike.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Amit Patkar said, "We demand that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant roll back the hike immediately. This is the second burden BJP has put on Goans after hiking power tariff.”

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa Convenor Amit Palekar said," To fuel the ever rising need of corruption of @BJP4Goa led by CM @DrPramodPSawant after electricity price hike now BJP puts hands in the pockets of common again by raising fuel prices. How much more you will make common man suffer?"
