Fatal Friday: 3 killed in separate accidents in State

PONDA/PERNEM: Three persons were killed, two in Ponda and one at Pernem on Friday.

In the first accident reported at the Ponda police station, a 19-year-old boy, Shravan Naik from Vadiwada, Kundaim, who was grievously injured in a self-accident on Ponda flyover on Friday morning, succumbed to his injuries.

Shravan lost control of his two-wheeler and collided against road dividers and later hit his bike against the electricity pole. He was studying in a higher secondary school at Ponda.

In another accident, a person identified as Mohammad Killedar from Sanvordem, was killed in a collision between a tanker, car and a truck at Mapa-Panchawadi, Shiroda.

As per eyewitnesses, the water tanker in which Mohammad was travelling along with two others collided against the tyre of a rubble-laden truck and further dashed against a car.

The tanker turned turtle and Mohammad was killed on the spot. He was working as a mechanic for the tanker owner for the last two decades at Sanvordem. A woman - Chandravati Kaskar, who was travelling in the car, was also injured.

The locals recalled that a few years ago, a school boy while riding a cycle was killed at the same spot at Mapa-Panchawadi. Both the accidents were reported within half-an-hour, according to the Ponda police station.

In the third accident reported at the Pernem police station, a woman identified as Sunita Naik, 54, of Torxem, Pernem was run over by a truck at Pernem junction on NH 66 at Poroscodem, Naibag.

Sunita was riding pillion on a two-wheeler with her husband Rajaram Naik, when the tragedy occurred. They were proceeding from Pernem to Patradevi.

The Pernem police conducted the panchanama and have registered a case against truck driver Pandit Naik (47) of Karnataka.

Meanwhile, South Goa DySP (Traffic) Prabodh Shirvoikar who visited the Mapa-Panchwadi accident site, said the road was narrow and needed a speed-breaker at the sharp turn. He appealed to the people to avoid rash driving, follow traffic rules and to use helmets to prevent fatal accidents.

A container truck carrying tyres was also overturned on the road at Dharbandora but nobody was injured, informed Ponda police.
