MARGAO: The traditional Goan fishermen held a short meeting with Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar’, the Chairman of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGDPA) on Thursday where they appealed to be allowed to sell fish at the wholesale fish market for longer hours than presently permitted.

The fishermen were backed by former Minister Churchill Alemao who also spoke to Salkar and urged the SGPDA to be more accommodating to the demands of the traditional Goan fish vendors.

While the fishermen have asked that they be allowed to sell fish until 12 am instead of  10 am, Salkar asked them to come for another meeting on Monday to discuss this issue further.

The fish vendors have insisted that these timings do not work for them as their business does not abide by any fixed timings as it all depends on when their boats return from the sea and that also depends on when they get a sizeable catch. They added that as soon as their boats land, they send the fish immediately to the market so that it can be sold fresh to the customers.
