Five Calangute establishments fined for  selling sub-standard cashew nuts

PANJIM: The Additional District Magistrate-cum-Adjudicating Officer, North imposed fines on five establishments for manufacturing and selling sub-standard cashew nuts.

According to the Additional District Magistrate-cum- Adjudicating Officer, the food safety officers of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) raided two shops selling cashew nuts in Calangute and were found selling sub-standard and contained speckled and spotted (black and brown) kernels more than the maximum permissible limit pertaining to party. A penalty of Rs 25,000 each was imposed on two proprietors.

Similarly, three other shops in Calangute were imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each for selling cashew nuts containing rancid kernels, shrivelled, speckled and spotted (black and brown) with presence of added flavour and taste and showing presence of testa and insects damage and free fatty acid more than the maximum permissible limit. The product was misbranded and the proprietors failed to display FSSAI logo license No. and batch No. on label pertaining to parties.

In another matter, the Additional District Magistrate-cum-Adjudicating Officer, North collectively imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on six persons including a manufacturer and a distributor for selling sub-stands soya chunks food items.

The Adjudicating Officer imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on an establishment selling sub-standard dry fruits food item with added non-permitted synthetic colour. Further fines of Rs 10,000 each was imposed on eight establishments in Panjim, Anjuna and in Sattari taluka for selling sub-standard jaggery food item with added non-permitted synthetic food colour; sub-standard refined sunflower oil food item and loose farsan (shev) by adding non-permitted synthetic food colour.

All the adjudication cases were filed by the food safety officers of the Directorate of FDA.
