Freedom fighter  Ramchandra passes away

PONDA: Ramchandra Shenvi Cuncolekar, who played an important role in the Liberation struggle of Goa, passed away on Saturday morning, after a brief illness at his residence at Shantinagar, Ponda. He was 91. Cuncolekar was the former president of Goa Freedom Fighters Association. 

He along with his colleagues worked underground and many freedom fighters were involved in various activities like distribution of pamphlets about Goa Liberation, mixing with people and creating awareness about Goa Liberation and also organising meetings for the guidance of senior freedom fighters at the country level to defeat the Portuguese.

Cuncolekar was involved in the freedom movement called by some freedom fighters even after the Liberation to remove the statue of Portuguese poet Camoes from the church premises at Old Goa. 

Cuncolekar is survived by a daughter, son-in-law and three granddaughters. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and other dignitaries from social as well as cultural and other fields have condoled his death.
