PANJIM: It was a moment of pride for Goa and Goans as four items –Bebinca, Mankurad Mango, Agsechi Vayingim (Brinjals from Agasaim) and Sat Shiro Bheno (Lady Finger) grown in the State have been granted Geographical Indications (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry at Chennai. 

With this the total number of GI tagged items from the State increased to nine. Prior to this, five items including Feni, Khola Chilli, Harmal Chilli, Myndoli Banana, Goan Khaje have already been allotted the GI tag.

The application for GI tagging of Bebinca was submitted by the All Goa Bakers and Confectioners Association, Colva while that for Mankurad Mango was made by the All Goa Mango Growers Association, Panjim and for the Brinjal was submitted by the Agasaim Brinjal Growers and Sellers Association. Similarly, the Goa Local Vegetables and Tubers Growers Association had filed the application for Sat Shiro Bheno.

The registration of a geographical indication (GI) is valid for a period of 10 years and can be renewed from time to time for a further period of 10 years each.

Meanwhile, five products from across the country have also received GI tag in July 2023. They are ‘Jalesar Dhatu Shilp’ (a metal craft); ‘Udaipur Koftgari Metal Craft’; ‘Bikaner Kashidakari Craft’; ‘Jodhpur Bandhej Craft’ and ‘Bikaner Usta Kala Craft’.
