PANJIM: The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) through its Logistics Committee, has conveyed its apprehensions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and   Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, regarding the potential further reduction of flight operations at the Dabolim International Airport.

In the communication addressed, the Chamber highlighted the significant decline in passenger footfall at Dabolim Airport, amounting to approximately 15-20 per cent compared to the last financial year. This decline is attributed to the relocation of international airlines to the Manohar International Airport at Mopa, posing a serious threat to the livelihoods of stakeholders and individuals dependent on Dabolim Airport. Furthermore, the potential closure of Dabolim Airport would adversely impact tourism activities in the South Goa district.

Dabolim International Airport has been a pivotal gateway for millions of passengers, serving both domestic and international travel. The continued operation of the airport is deemed essential for the economic well-being of the region. The fear is that the termination of major airline operations could trigger a chain reaction, leading to the closure of other airline services and, eventually, a complete closure of the airport, the GCCI said.

The Goa Chamber has urged the Prime Minister as well as the Chief Minister to facilitate a meeting with relevant stakeholders, including government officials, airline representatives, and local communities. The objective is to collaboratively explore alternative solutions that ensure the sustained operation and growth of Dabolim Airport.

One of the primary suggestions put forth by the Chamber is the alignment of User Development Charges (UDF) for both Mopa and Dabolim Airports. Additionally, there is a call for improvements in user facilities at Dabolim, encompassing better upkeep, aesthetics, enhanced transport facilities, faster clearances, and improved turnarounds. These measures are believed to attract more stakeholders to the airport and contribute to its overall development.
