PANJIM: “Earlier Goa was synonymous with drugs but not anymore. At present tourists visit this iconic State to observe its natural beauty, food, culture apart from its music and beaches,” said new Director General of Police Jaspal Singh.

The frequent arrest of drug cartel dons suppliers and major players, actually belies such claims as drug cartels, gangs and their entire ecosystem are largely present and functioning in the State.

DGP Singh, who took charge on Thursday, said that the police will formulate an appropriate strategy to crack down on the drugs network in the State with the help of Central enforcement agencies and their counterparts from the neighbouring States.

Singh said, “Drug trade has a typical dynamics. It is a complete chain actually. Sometimes international cartels are involved and sometimes local cartels are involved in it.”

The Goa Police will seek help from Central agencies like the Narcotics Control Bureau and police from neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka. In general, police have managed to make a dent in the supply of drugs to the State and it is much under control, he said.

Singh said that he will also work toward formulating strategies to deal with different types of crimes happening in the State. “I will interact with police officers to understand law and order and the dynamics of crime happening in Goa. Appropriate strategies will be formulated to reduce the crime rate,” he said.

Singh warned that violent behaviour of the police force will not be tolerated and appropriate action will be taken against those policemen, who indulge in such behaviour.
