CALANGUTE: As vector borne diseases come to haunt Candolim, the health authorities have sounded a ‘dengue alert’ and called upon the public to join hands in their campaign and make it a mass movement against the menace.
Launching an ‘anti- container’ drive, the civic body has urged villagers to be extremely careful and health conscious.
“People keep storing water in drums because of acute shortage. This poses a challenge during the ‘anti-container’ drive to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in Candolim and turn into a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes,” said deputy sarpanch Amalina Dias.
Meanwhile, the Candolim Primary Health Centre (PHC) has issued notices under the Goa Public Health Act to a large number of houses for failing to empty containers with stored water as they have become mosquito breeding hot spots.
The deputy sarpanch said with Candolim being identified as one of the high risk areas, the panchayat has been carrying out regular fogging in the area.
“Because of water shortage, people store water in drums which turn into breeding spots for mosquitoes. Fogging is being carried out in all the wards. People think fogging is enough precaution against dengue but that is not true. Mosquitoes which breed in one area can move around and infect people in other areas. People who use drums should close them properly so that mosquitoes don’t breed there,” Amalina told reporters on Friday, adding the panchayat has also been spraying larvicide wherever their workers find accumulated water.
