MARGAO: In an effort to curb the rising number of fatal accidents attributed largely to drunken driving, the Margao Traffic Cell has ramped up its enforcement actions over the past six months, booking a staggering 21,907 cases of Motor Act violations.

According to PI Sanjay Dalvi of the Margao Traffic Cell, a total of 292 individuals have been apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol within this period. These cases have been referred to the RTO, leading to the suspension of licenses. This stringent measure is part of the Cell's broader strategy to enhance road safety.

PI Dalvi highlighted that the highest number of cases—1,365—were for over speeding, with fines collected from vehicle owners. Another prevalent violation was using a mobile phone while driving, which resulted in 260 bookings.

Dangerous parking practices remain a significant issue, with 6,556 cases reported, while 6,855 individuals were booked for driving in no-entry zones. Additional violations included driving without proper lights (375 cases), using dazzling lights (314 cases), and having tinted glasses (781 cases).

A particularly concerning statistic was that 32 people were fined for allowing individuals, often minors, without valid licences to drive their vehicles.

PI Dalvi emphasised the importance of staff deployment during school hours, especially in the morning and afternoon when school gets out, to manage traffic effectively. The Comba area, home to four schools, a higher secondary school, and a law college, witnesses significant traffic congestion during these times.

The Margao Traffic Cell's rigorous enforcement over the last six months reflects a determined effort to improve road safety and reduce the incidence of traffic violations.
