PANJIM: The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) has expressed serious concern over recent statements made by Minister Vishwajit Rane, in which he indicated plans to move a breach of privilege motion against newspapers and journalists for what he termed a “malicious campaign”.
“While we recognise and respect the privileges held by members of the legislative assembly, we are alarmed that such statements, without naming any individual or the nature of the breach of privilege suffered, can have a chilling effect on the media,” said the statement.
The Union reaffirmed its commitment to the media’s role in upholding the Constitutionally guaranteed rights and asserted that the media will not be deterred from performing its duties responsibly. “GUJ will continue to provide support to any journalist or news organisation engaged in their professional responsibilities,” it added.
