CALANGUTE: A mother and son were injured following a blast due to an alleged LPG cylinder leakage early on Sunday morning.

Pilerne Fire Station officials stated that the duo were residing in a one-room house at Bhattiwaddo, Nerul and the fire probably broke out when  Jaya Shirodkar, lit the gas stove to make tea at around 7.35 am. “The gas must have leaked during the night and caught fire with the spark of the stove lighter,” fire brigade officials said. “There were two cylinders and both were found intact. The fire brigade staff notice some leakage and closed the regulator switch to avoid further damages,” said an official.

The front door of the house was flung 20 mtrs away with the impact of the blast, while the door curtain was found hanging on an electricity pole. All the household items were damaged and the windows panes were also smashed.

Jaya and her son Dilesh Shirodkar suffered severe burn injuries and neighbours shifted them to the Candolim primary health centre from where they were later sent to the Goa Medical College at Bambolim.

The house was also extensively damaged and Fire officials said as per their preliminary estimate, the loss is around Rs 5 lakh.
