No parking, no permits: Borda locals push for supermarket licence to be revoked

MARGAO: Citing ongoing traffic issues, citizens and local councillors have called for the Margao Municipal Council to revoke the permissions granted to supermarkets in Borda. On Thursday, local councillor Camilo Barretto filed a formal complaint with the Chief Officer, raising concerns over the impact of these permissions on local traffic conditions and seeking a review of the decisions affecting the busy stretch.

Speaking to reporters, Barretto expressed concerns about the upcoming opening of a supermarket, highlighting that the planning and allocation of parking space have been inadequately addressed. He stated, “The current design of the parking area in front of the supermarket is insufficient for the expected volume of shoppers. This lack of ample parking space is likely to lead to several issues, including traffic congestion, safety hazards, customer discomfort, and local disruption.”

He further claimed that St Joaquim Road, running from Holy Spirit Church to Bolshe Circle, is one of the busiest roads in Margao, with a high volume of vehicle traffic at all times. “Moreover, the area surrounding the supermarket is already congested with numerous business establishments, leading to significant parking and traffic issues throughout the day,” stated Luis Fernandes, a resident of Borda. Fernandes also urged the civic body to verify the occupancy certificate with the supermarket’s owner to ensure compliance and address any potential concerns.
