PANJIM: Ahead of the State Assembly elections due in February 2022, Goa has got a full-time Governor with the appointment of PS Sreedharan Pillai to the post. Pillai was serving as Governor of Mizoram before the transfer to Goa.
Since the transfer of Governor Satya Pal Malik to Meghalaya in August, 2020, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari was given additional charge of Goa.
President Ram Nath Kovind, in an order issued on Tuesday, has appointed Pillai as the new Governor of Goa. Pillai will be the 19th Governor of Goa.
Pillai, a BJP leader from Kerala, had earlier been the party’s State president there.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant congratulated Pillai on his appointment. “Congratulations P S Sreedharan Pillai on his appointment as governor of Goa. Looking forward to welcome him in our beautiful state,” the Chief Minister tweeted.
In a series of representations made to the President of India, the opposition parties had been demanding a full-time Governor for Goa to intervene in State affairs.
