Ponda cops create awareness among citizens on three new criminal laws

PONDA: With three new criminal laws coming into effect from July 1,   the Ponda Police on Monday created awareness among the people about them.

PI  Sagun Sawant who chaired the meeting along with his officials said that the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been replaced with Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, the CrPC with Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and the Indian Evidence Act has been replaced with Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.

Social workers, PMC  councillors, lawyers and journalists and citizens attended the meeting. The citizens stressed to on the need to create awareness about these laws in schools so that every section of society was aware of it.

Social worker  Seema Fernandes said with new laws, she is expecting punishment to accused and justice to victims at the earliest. 

PI  Sawant said under new laws, besides various provisions, there would be online registration of police complaints, summons through electronic modes such as SMS, mandatory videography of crime scenes etc.

Some Offences under Colonial era laws such as murder which used to earlier registered under section 302 will be registered under 101 under new law, cheating under old law section 420 would be registered under section 316 under new law, illegal assembly under old section 144 would be registered under new law under section 187, waging of war under old laws under section 121 will come under 146 of new law, defamation under old law 499 would be recorded under section 356 of new law, gangrape under section 376  of old law would be registered under section 63,64, 70 of new law, similarly sedition under section 124-A would be registered under section 170 of new law.
