PANJIM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red colour warning for Friday even as heavy rain continues to pound the state.

“We are expecting peak activity from Thursday evening. A red colour warning has been issued for Friday considering the chances of very heavy rainfall. It will sustain for the next three days, for when we have issued an orange colour warning, although the impact will decrease slightly,” IMD Goa station in-charge Rahul Mohan, told Herald.

The disaster management authorities have upped necessary precautions to tackle situations arising out of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. While people have been advised to take all the precautions while outdoors, fishermen have been instructed not to venture into the sea for the next five days.

Goa has been experiencing heavy rainfall leading to severe waterlogging in urban as well as rural areas, landslides, and the falling of weak trees and branches and even a few structures. Water reservoirs, too, are fast filling to maximum capacity.

According to the IMD, Goa received 133cm of rainfall since the onset of the present monsoon season. As rain conditions improved from the third week of June, the state recorded 13 per cent more rainfall than the average for the period.

Mohan said 487mm of rainfall was recorded between July 1 and 7 alone, making up 46 per cent of the entire month’s normal value.
