PANJIM:  An evening walk turned out to be a nightmare for two siblings aged between five and seven years as they were brutally mauled by a Rottweiler in horrific incident reported in an elite colony at Shivnagar-Alto-Oaitiyant, Taleigao, on Sunday evening at around 7 pm.

Describing the incident as sheer horror, the passersby said the ferocious dog managed to get out of the compound of a bungalow and pounced on the little kids brutally attacking them. The boy sustained facial injuries including his ear and also injuries to his chest, while the Rottweiler sunk his canines deep into the girl’s skull and neck. Both the victims were shifted from casualty to Ward 138 and late night they were brought back to Casualty ward for stitches. Till 11.30 pm medico legal case was not registered.

They said that the kids were out on an evening walk along with their mother when the horrible incident unfolded.

Shocked by the incident, the helpless mother could do nothing much to save her little ones from the beast.

“After hearing the cries of the children, I rushed to the spot where I saw the dog holding on to the girl to the ground by grabbing her neck.  The kids’ mother and two others reportedly the maids of the owners of the dog tried to pull the dog away. The Rottweiler was huge and uncontrollable,” an eyewitness said.

A local claimed that when the police arrived the representatives of the dog’s owner were trying to ‘settle’ the matter by apologising and offering to bear the victims’ medical expenses.

Panjim Police Inspector (PI) Nikhil Palekar, said, “Upon receiving information about the incident, immediately a team of Panjim Police rushed to the spot. The injured victims were shifted to Goa Medical College (GMC) in an ambulance. If we receive an official complaint then we will initiate legal action against the dog’s owner as per the relevant laws.”

When O Heraldo brought to his notice that it is case of dangerous chattel, and questioned whether they could take suo moto action in the action or would it be swept under the carpet like the Banastarim incident, Panjim PI Nikhil Palekar said no formal complaint was received, but have received information and that his PSI was at GMC but he said he will “act according to the law”.

Taleigao sarpanch Janu Mahadev Rosario said that he would send panchayat workers along with the dog rescue team and ensure that the Rottweiler is kept under observation at the veterinary clinic or under the watch of NGO working for animal welfare.

The sarpanch assured to take necessary steps to prevent such horrific incidents in future.

“The incident took place at around 7 pm and by the time my kids were brought to hospital it was 8 pm. They have suffered severe bleeding. I have pleaded to the doctor here to provide the best medical treatment. My wife fell unconscious outside the ward as she is not able to see the condition both the kids,” Ram Milan, father of children.
