PANJIM/MARGAO: The lifeless body of Javed Sadekar, a 38-year-old casino employee, from Margao, was found floating near a casino, opposite to the old Secretariat (Adil Shah Palace), in the River Mandovi, early Saturday morning. The body was found after two days of relentless search for the victim. After the post-mortem was conducted, the body was handed over to the family.
The funeral was held on Saturday evening, at Margao kabrastan. Large crowd of people attended the funeral. Sadekar was a resident of Aquem, Margao.
According to Panjim Police, Sadekar suffered head injuries and died due to drowning.
Sadekar was flung into the River Mandovi on Thursday evening, when a speeding rent-a-car rammed into his motorcycle on the old Mandovi bridge, while overtaking another vehicle.
The reckless driver of the rent-a-car vehicle, Ankit Triparthy from Odisha, was medically examined and was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Panjim Police arrested Triparthy on Thursday itself, on charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence of liquor. He was produced before the JMFC Panjim on Friday and remanded to three days judicial custody.
An FIR has been lodged against Triparthy under Sections 504 (culpable homicide), 279 (rash and negligent driving), 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code, and 185 (drunk driving) of the Motor Vehicle Act.
Javed Sadekar is survived by his wife and three young sons aged three-and-a-half years, 6 years and 11 years and was staying with his wife’s family at Nachinola. On his side, he is survived by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
The family consisting of his wife and her family, and his family were shattered after his body could not be found on Friday, and were hoping against hope that he would be found alive. A helicopter, boats and divers searched for him on Thursday and Friday, but to no avail.
