Salcete struggles to stay afloat as trees uproot, roads flood and power lines snap

Published on

MARGAO: Incessant rains pounded Salcete on Sunday, resulting in numerous trees uprooting and falling onto roads, power lines, and houses on Monte Hill and in Comba, and across areas like Davorlim, Curtorim, Cuncolim, Assolna, and Chinchinim.

Locals took initiative to clear minor tree blockages from roads, minimising reliance on fire and emergency services. Fortunately, no casualties were reported despite widespread damage. The subway in Salcete was also flooded temporarily, but the water receded later.

The heavy rainfall caused the river level at Paroda to rise, overflowing onto the bridge and cutting off the area from the rest of the state. Roads were submerged, disrupting normal life and affecting public transport.

Some villages experienced power cuts, and ongoing traffic had to be redirected via Chandor as the district administration closely monitored the situation. Villagers expressed frustration, noting that these issues recur annually despite assurances from politicians.

Fire station officers led teams to clear a landslide in Curtorim and fallen trees at various locations, including one near the Electricity substation at Nessai, to restore traffic flow.
