MARGAO: Informing that an inspection will be conducted pertaining to discharge of sewage into the Saipem Lake in Navelim, Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar on Sunday assured that all the measures will be taken to stop the pollution of rivulets and water bodies in the State of Goa.

Speaking to mediapersons on the sideline of a function organised by Quepem Urban Multi-Purpose Credit Society, Shirodkar said that the people need to change their mindset with regard to releasing sewage and garbage into the nullahs and rivulets.

“There are strict laws against those indulged in such types of activities, but at the same time there is an urgent need to create awareness about the same, so that the people themselves stop polluting the water bodies,” he stated.

Shirodkar said that he is very much aware about the prevailing situations of Saipem Lake at Navelim, wherein sewage discharge is witnessed into the lake.

It is pertinent to note that past few days a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by petitioner Antonio Alvares before the Bench of High Court of Bombay at Goa regarding the release of raw sewage into Saipem Lake, located at Navelim. The High Court had issued directions to the Public Works Department (PWD) and Margao Municipal Council (MMC) to find solutions to the problems highlighted.

“The PWD should also render all possible cooperation to the MMC so that there is some solution to the issues highlighted by the petitioner in the PIL,” the Division Bench comprising Justices M S Sonak and R N Laddha stated.

The Minister informed that he along with the authorities concerned will inspect the prevailing situations and steps will be taken to prevent further pollution of the Saipem Lake by discharging sewage water into it.

He also warned of strict action against all those indulged in discharging sewage water into the water bodies.
