Solar shrimps fail to surface, disappoint Colva fishermen

Dreams of netting a bumper catch shattered as rains play spoilsport

MARGAO: As the fishing ban neared its end, traditional fishermen (Ramponkars) from Colva and the coastal belt were disappointed after catching fewer solar shrimps on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, they also noted that the rate for solar shrimps was very low, though they remained hopeful for a bumper catch in the coming days. According to the fishermen, rough weather conditions had contributed to the diminished catch, affecting both the quantity and market price of the shrimp.

The traditional fishermen were in a sober mood after failing to net more than a few kilos of solar shrimps, falling far short of their expectations. On the first day, they managed to secure a rate of only Rs 80 to Rs 90 per kilo, reflecting a significant drop in both catch volume and market value.

For traditional fishermen, this is a crucial period to earn some money as the trawlers venture into the sea to harvest shrimps." Solar shrimps as a seasonal delicacy as they surface for a fortnight and then disappear into the sea," stated a fisherman.

They said that they are expecting better business in the coming days, as they anticipate improved conditions and smoother fishing activities.

It is pertinent to note that the fishing ban will be lifted in Goa in a few days; however, the traditional fishermen community has already begun entering the sea and catching fish using traditional methods.

This early start aims to capitalize on the remaining days of the ban and prepare for the full resumption of fishing activities once the official restrictions are lifted.

Sudan Fernandes, a local fisherman, said that many of their members were shocked to witness such a limited catch.

"The less catch is due to rough weather in the sea," he claimed. "We were expecting at least a good rate, but that too was disappointing." Fernandes emphasized that both the reduced catch and lower market rates had compounded the challenges faced by the fishermen, making the current situation even more disheartening.
