PANJIM: In line with Kerala and Delhi, the Goa government proposes to launch a special pink force within their open Police Department structures to tackle crimes against women.

Maintaining that the crime detection rate in Goa is the highest in the country, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, raising concern over rising crime against women, said that more efforts need to be made to prevent such crimes.

Sawant was speaking at a valedictory function of a training programme for Deputy Superintendents of Police.

Sawant said that he has held a meeting with Director General of Police (DGP) on the law and order situation and discussed various measures that need to be put in place.

“I had a meeting with the DGP and Superintendent of Police (Crime) on prevention of crime and discussed the precautions we need to take and adopt new initiatives especially for the safety of women. We need to put in more efforts,” he said.

“We are thinking of creating a pink force… pink female force… especially for women safety. We are thinking of how to introduce this. The Home Department will work on the proposal,” the Chief Minister added.

Sawant said that the government will provide whatever support is required for the awareness purpose and infrastructure. “The Home Department will come up with several initiatives for women’s safety as soon as possible. We need to work to prevent crime against women,” he said.

The Chief Minister also said that Goa has the highest crime detection rate in the country and urged the State police to now focus on prevention of crimes.

“We have the highest crime detection rate in the country. But now we need to work on prevention. No doubt, you are detecting crime. But you will say, how can we prevent crime. It is possible,” the Chief Minister said.

The government is facing a backlash over rising criminal activities and deteriorating law and order situation. The opposition Congress has even sought the intervention of the Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai and demanded dismissal of the BJP-led government.
