Two caught poaching frogs

MARGAO: Forest Department officials nabbed Ulderic Fernandes from Caxxetta, Velim and James Perreria from Sibbrette, Velim for poaching frogs at Quitol, Quepem Friday night.

They have been booked under Sections 9 and 39 of the Wildlife Protection Act in a raid raid was conducted by Range Forest Officer Narayan Waingankar, Forest Guard Shailesh Dessai and Round Forester Sunil Velip from Pissornem while on night patrol.

Four frogs were found in their possession. Two species of frogs, Indian Bullfrog and Jerdon's Bullfrog are consumed by foodies in Goa.

Even though frog poaching is banned in the State, people do catch them because of the high demand as its meat is considered to be a delicacy.

Both the alleged poachers have been remanded for two days in cutody by Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Quepem. RFO Narayan Waingankar is investigating the matter.
