MARGAO: In the conflict between fish traders and those engaged in sopo collection at the wholesale fish market, a video has gone viral showing fish being sold without being checked for formalin.

On Wednesday, following a complaint from a concerned individual involved in sopo collection, FDA officials rushed to the site and halted the sale of the fish for the moment. A video on the issue went viral on Wednesday, raising serious concerns about the sale of chemical-free fish.

It is pertinent to note that, in recent days, a conflict has arisen between fish traders and individuals engaged in sopo collection on behalf of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority at the wholesale fish market. The fish traders have even filed a police complaint, demanding action against those involved in extorting money from the fishermen.

It may be recalled that there was a previous issue concerning the use of formalin on fish, which was later sold at the wholesale fish market.  As claimed by the person engaged in sopo collection, on Wednesday, some fish traders were selling fish before it had been checked for formalin use.

Meanwhile, Krishna alias Daji Salkar informed that the conflicts between the sopo collectors and fish traders have been resolved. However, the new allegation regarding fish being sold without formalin checks has introduced a new twist to the matter.

On the other hand, the Fatorda Police have issued a notice to the person engaged in sopo collection, requesting that he produce documents proving his official appointment to collect sopo from fish traders and fishermen at the wholesale fish market.

However, the person has informed the police that he and his team are merely assisting the SGPDA in collecting sopo.
