A minor ammonia gas leakage was reported on Tuesday at Berth No.8 in the Mormugao Port Authority (M.P.A). Prompt action from the firefighters on site successfully contained the leak, preventing the spread of the hazardous gas.

According to a fire officer present at the scene, the leak was deemed minor in nature, and immediate measures were taken to control it. The situation is currently under control, and repair work is underway to address the leakage and ensure the safety of the area.

An ammonia gas leak was also reported at the fish meal plant at Cuncolim Industrial Estate in December 2022. The incident occurred when the workers were releasing excess ammonia gas in the water tank, which accidentally leaked outside.

Fire tenders were rushed to the site immediately. No causalities were reported, however, some workers reported suffocation after inhaling the gas. The fish meal plant was immediately shut down and the situation was brought under control.

Ammonia gas is known to be highly toxic and can pose serious health risks, including respiratory distress and chemical burns. It is crucial for residents and individuals in the area to remain calm and follow the instructions provided by the authorities.
