Danushka Gunathilaka's return to the world of domestic and international cricket is on the horizon, following his exoneration from sexual assault charges. Back in November 2022, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), while supporting Gunathilaka's legal proceedings in Australia and covering his legal expenses (with an obligation for him to repay), had enforced a suspension on him across all cricket formats during the ongoing legal proceedings. Nevertheless, an "independent inquiry committee," appointed by SLC, has now recommended an "immediate removal of Gunathilaka's cricket ban," allowing him to resume his regular cricket activities and national responsibilities. After his acquittal in a Sydney court on September 23, the 32-year-old Gunathilaka has expressed a strong eagerness to return to cricket and training.
Furthermore, Gunathilaka has indicated his intention to seek compensation from the Australian government. Throughout the legal process, he was required to stay in Australia and was subject to various restrictions, including bans on the use of dating apps and social media, which were gradually eased over time. Despite the challenges he faced, Gunathilaka garnered substantial public support from notable figures, including both current and former cricketers, as well as a government minister. It's worth noting that this suspension marks the latest episode in a series of disciplinary actions taken against Gunathilaka by SLC. The most recent suspension occurred in June 2021 when he, along with Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella, breached the Sri Lanka team's bio-secure bubble during their tour in England.
