NEW DELHI: First time MP from South Goa Capt Viriato Fernandes roared in Parliament on Monday, making a fervent appeal to the Centre not to destroy Goa by making it a coal hub.

Beginning his maiden intervention in the Lok Sabha when his name was called out, Capt Viriato said, “The whole world knows Goa as the most beautiful place, a paradise on earth. But in the last few years, we have been seeing a conspiracy with projects that are being thrust on Goa, without taking the people into confidence.”

“In 2016, they took our rivers in the name of nationalization. Thereafter during the lock down they brought the three linear projects –the double tracking, the expansion of roadways and the Tamnar project which we have documentary project, this is to only to bring coal and to convert Goa into a coal hub.”

Converting Goa into a coal hub would destroy the main stay of Goa’s economy which is tourism.
