In a significant development, Contempt Petition 6/2021 addressing the issue of illegal sand mining in Goa underwent a crucial hearing today. The High Court bench expressed severe dissatisfaction and rebuked the government machinery, with particular emphasis on the Police department, for its failure to effectively combat illegal sand mining across various regions in Goa.

The criticism reached a point where there was a contemplation of summoning the Director General of Police (DGP) for Goa to appear before the High Court immediately. However, Additional Advocate General (AAG) Shirodkar intervened, pleading for a one-week grace period to take substantial action against the resumption of large-scale illegal sand extraction at identified locations.

The High Court's order, expected to be uploaded shortly, carries a directive for the Chief Secretary and DGP to convene a meeting within this week. They are mandated to formulate and submit a comprehensive action plan to address the issue urgently.

The backdrop of this intense scrutiny was set by the Goa River Sand Protectors Network, which brought to light shocking photographs showcasing extensive illegal sand extraction activities near the Amona bridge. The audacity of these activities occurring right under the nose of Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has further intensified the public concern.
