PANJIM: IMD, Goa has said the rainfall for Goa, in June 2024 was normal compared to June 2023, which was deficient. South West monsoon arrived over Goa on June 4, 2024.

The highest amount of rainfall was recorded over Sankhali, in North Goa, followed by Sanguem, in South Goa. This year Pernem, in North Goa has received the lowest rainfall this June, Rajasree, Scientist at Goa IMD told Herald TV.

“If we calculate the rainfall for the month of June 2023, it was in the deficient category, but this year it is in the normal category. That year the highest rainfall was reported from Margao and least amount was received in Valpoi. Heavy rainfall can be expected over Goa in the coming days and yellow alert has been issued,” Rajasree said.

The forecast for July and August will be above normal and it is estimated that the seasonal rainfall this year will also be above average.

Former Scientist from NIO Ramesh Kumar told Herald TV, “This year the rainfall is very high compared to 2023. This is because of two or three factors –last year there was El Nino effect and Indian Ocean Dipole, due to which the rainfall was less in June.
This year both are not there. Hence this year the rainfall is more. From July to September the rainfall will be much more due to the phenomena called La Nina which is going to come.   This is unusual cooling which occurs over the coast of Peru which will affect the monsoon over Goa.”
