STREET VOICES: Is the filthy condition of Panjim fish market keeping away customers?

Herald TV had highlighted the condition of the Panjim Fish Market on July 9, 2024. In this edition of Street Voices, we asked people what they think about the condition of the Panjim Market and whether a new market should be built

"There is dirty water here. There is no way one can walk here. Just now I would have fallen down. I slipped on the tiles. Mostly I don’t come to the market. I buy the fish which is sold on the road outside the Panjim fish market. The market is not clean. There should be systematic planning, the drainage should be slopping. The CCP cleans but since the fisher folks put water on the fish, it keeps on dripping in the pathway, making it slippery."

Anita Rodrigues, Ex DySP

"Anyone will die here. The stench is killing. At 3pm the stench is unbearable when they come to collect the fish and chicken waste. They take the waste daily but sometimes the garbage and chicken waste remains overnight and stinks. It is not possible to bear the smell. The CCP truck stops in front of our shop. There is a lot of leakage. They tell us they are breaking and building a new market, but that has not happened. Fifteen years, I've been suffering this. Others sitting outside have to suffer even more."

Costao Marques, Shop owner

"We have to bear the toilet smell. The dogs come and sit here. That place stinks. We are just passing our days. No customers are coming here because of the stench. We are not getting customers. People just don’t want to enter this part of the market. The whole place is stinking and there is a lot of leakage through the tin roof. Rain water falls on us and the customers. For the last 6 months there is water falling on the roof from a tank. Two people fell down Wednesday morning."

Ulga, Fisherwoman
