The image and its symbols

The traditional picture of St Joseph Vaz is a replica of the painting on display at the National seminary in Kandy, Sri Lanka. As a missionary, St Joseph Vaz is depicted in pictures with three distinct features: a crucifix in his hand, the Sun and Moon behind him and a mitre and crosier placed on two sides.

Though it may be an uninspiring picture dressed in priestly garb with the Bishop’s head gear (mitre) and staff at either side, it delivers a profound and deep meaning to the viewer. St Joseph Vaz had said, “When exercising these duties you should remain within the circle of modesty without tresspassing the limits.”
