RAIA: In an electrifying encounter of the 33rd Super Soccer tournament, Navelim Villagers Union scored a 2-1 win over UC Benaulim to move ahead in the Joao Xavier memorial football tournament organised by the United Boys of Dando-Colva, at Dando ground, Benaulim, on Thursday.

Navelim Villagers Union’s early complacency allowed Keegan Fernandes to capitalise on a defensive blunder, putting UC Benaulim ahead in the 7th minute. However, Navelim Villagers Union quickly regrouped, asserting dominance, yet facing fierce resistance from UC Benaulim’s midfield trio - captain Arif, Nicholas and Cedron. Navelim Villagers Union persistence paid off with Trevor Souza and Trevis Gomes netting goals in the 17th and 19th minute, respectively. At first half, Navelim Villagers Union were leading 2-1.

The second half saw relentless efforts from Navelim Villagers Union through Malappa and Velington but UC Benaulim’s keeper Tino was a wall, making stunning saves to keep their team’s hopes alive.  Despite UC Benaulim’s valiant attempts to equalise, relentless rain hampered their momentum. The match ended 2-1 in Navelim Villagers Union favour.

Aston Rodrigues of UC Benaulim earned the man-of-the-match award, presented by former international footballer Climax Lawrence, honouring UC Benaulim’s spirited display against the odds.
